General introduction
to writing an application for ARIJ:
If you are planning to
pursue a good story of interest to the
public, you can apply for funding from
Arab Reporters for Investigative
Journalism (ARIJ) to carry out an
investigation.
If ARIJ agrees to fund
your investigation, the media support
network will cover all costs related to
your investigation, including salary,
travel, accommodation, laboratory and
scientific tests etc… in line with an
agreed budget that forecasts actual costs.
Before you apply you
must fulfil the following requirements:
• You need to have an original idea, which
is NEW and of relevance to the
public
• You need to make some initial research
to test if your idea is valid (acquire
basic information that confirms the
viability of your idea and investigation)
• Based on your initial research you
should be able to formulate the core of
your STORY in one or two sentences. This
is also called: "The Thesis" or
"The Hypothesis".
ARIJ does not fund the
investigation of broad ideas like
“pollution in Lebanon” or “drugs in
Jordan”. But ARIJ has funded concrete
investigations that studied pollution
caused by olive oil producers in Jordan,
dioxin pollution from hospital
incinerators in Syria that is threatening
public health, and the use of hard drugs
among university students in Jordan. In
all three cases, it was possible to prove
the existence of a problem, to point out
the victims, and to prove who or what was
behind the problem: The Culprit(s).
ARIJ only funds stories
that reveal something NEW and are of
general interest to the public.
Furthermore, ARIJ investigations must
be based on solid documentation,
whether written or verbal. |
